Mayor Stephanie Rawlings-Blake Announces Expansion Of Program Credited With Reducing Gun Violence In City Neighborhoods

New study shows the Safe Streets Baltimore program is a successful replication of Chicago’s CeaseFire violence prevention initiative.

Today, Mayor Stephanie Rawlings-Blake announced the expansion of the successful Safe Streets Baltimore initiative. A Request for Proposals (RFP) was approved this morning by the Board of Estimates. The expansion of Safe Streets Baltimore is supported by the release today of a new study by researchers at the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health demonstrating the program’s effectiveness.

In September, the Health Department announced that Safe Streets received a $2.2 million grant from the U.S. Department of Justice’s Office of Juvenile Justice and Delinquency Prevention (OJJDP). The three-year award is part of OJJDP’s Community-Based Violence Prevention Demonstration Program, which provides funding for multi-strategy, multi-disciplinary approaches to reduce gun violence. The funding will also be used to expand the Safe Streets Baltimore initiative to two additional communities that are disproportionately impacted by violence. Interested community groups can review the RFP at http://baltimorehealth.org/rfp.html(External Link).

Baltimore, MD / November 12, 2011 - The Baltimore Police Department is investigating a series of Molotov Cocktail incidents that occurred early this morning within Northwest Baltimore.

Just before 1:30 am, public safety personnel responded to the 4100 Blk of Belvieu Avenue for report of a fire.  Once upon the scene, preliminary investigation revealed that a Molotov Cocktail was thrown at the rear, 1st floor window of a dwelling. The Molotov Cocktail did not enter, and only partially ignited once falling to the ground.

The second incident occurred moments later within the 3900 Blk of Groveland Avenue.  Public safety personnel were summonsed to the location for report of a fire and upon arrival, determined that a Molotov Cocktail had been thrown at a first floor window of an apartment.  The device broke the window and entered the dwelling, where it self-extinguished and caused no damage (beyond the broken window).

The third and final incident occurred within the 3300 Blk of Liberty Heights Avenue, just before 3:00 am.  public safety personnel were called to the location for report of a fire.  Upon arrival investigation revealed that a Molotov Cocktail had been thrown through a first floor apartment window and ignited, setting the window on fire.  An occupant who woke after hearing the device shatter extinguished the fire and called 911.

Although no injuries were sustained during any of the incidents and property damage was minimal, the Baltimore Police Department Arson Unit is vigorously investigating with the understanding that the potential for serious injury or life-loss from such acts of arson could be significant. Police patrols will be increased in the affected areas.

Anyone with any information concerning these incidents is urged to immediately call police via MetroCrimeStoppers at 1-866-7LOCKUP.
